BLADENBORO – Harley Jordan connected on 5 consecutive 3-point shots in the 3rd period to rack up 21 points and lead Bladenboro to a 37-21 Waccamaw Middle School Conference ‘A’ Division girls’ basketball victory over Tabor City Thursday.
Tabor City netted a transition lay-up to start the 2nd half that trimmed Bladenboro’s lead to 15-9. Jordan buried a 3-point shot from the left wing, then less than a minute later nailed another 3-ball from the right wing. Jordan interrupted the 3-point barrage by stealing the ball and racing for a lay-up.
On the next Bulldog possession, Jordan swished another 3-ball from the right wing. Teammate Amiya McCarty sank a free throw, and Jordan finally missed, making only 1 of 2 technical free throws. But from 3-point land she remained perfect draining another one from the right wing to cap a 16-0 Lady Bulldog run.
After a Lady Eagle follow shot, Jordan moved a little closer to the top of the key and drilled in her 5th 3-pointer of the quarter. Teammate Hadley Dove hurled in a 1-handed follow shot to grow the Bladenboro lead to 36-11 at the quarter break.
Dove cashed in a free throw for the only Lady Bulldog point in the final period. Tabor City rallied with 10 points to trim the final margin to 37-21.
Allison Hickman finished with 7 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Amiya McCarty sparked the defense with 7 steals and scored 4 points. Dove totaled 3 points, and Jordan grabbed 4 rebounds and had 2 steals to go with her 21 points.
Bladenboro jumped ahead early as Hickman drained a pair of foul shots and muscled in a rebound basket. McCarty drove for a lay-up and a 6-2 Lady Bulldog lead at the quarter break.
Hickman tossed in 3 of 4 free throws to begin the 2nd quarter. Jordan banked in her first 3-ball from the right wing to open up a 12-4 Lady Bulldog lead. Cheyenne Reinhart banked in a 16-footer from the key, and McCarty canned a free throw for a 15-7 halftime lead.
Coach Otis Evans’ Lady Bulldogs finished their season with a 9-3 record and were the Bladen County Girls Tournament champions. Bladenboro tied Nakina for 2nd place in the ‘A’ Division standings with a 5-3 league record.
“We had a good year and only lost those 3 games by a total of 9 points,” said Evans. “We are very appreciative of the girls and their efforts, even though they were often outsized by their opponents.”
J. Hewett and D. Johnson led Tabor City with 6 points each.
