WHITEVILLE – Clarkton School of Discovery defeated Whiteville Central 24-21 Monday night in a battle of Waccamaw Middle School Conference division winners.

Coach Chris Callihan’s Lady Blue Devils, the champions of the Waccamaw’s AA Division, raised their record to 14-1 with the victory over Central who was the AAA Division champion.

Maegan Burney tossed in a basket and a free throw, and teammate AnnaGrey Heustess dropped in a basket as the Lady Blue Devils took a 5-4 first quarter lead.

Makayla Dixon threw in a basket and a free throw in the second period, and Burney and Heustess delivered a basket each to keep Clarkton on top 12-11 at halftime.

Burney, Dixon and Shy’Asia Ratliff pumped in baskets to keep the Lady Blue Devils ahead 18-17 at the third quarter break. Dixon sank a basket and 2 free throws in the final period, and Heustess worked inside for a basket as Clarkton pulled out the victory.

Dixon led the Lady Blue Devil scoring with 9 points, and Burney followed with 7 points. Heustess finished with 6 points. M. Bennett led Central with 9 points, and Mykelliona Shipman added 8 points.
