NAKINA – Alaya White and Shy’Asia Ratliff led a 21-8 second-half surge that carried Clarkton School of Discovery to a 37-23 Waccamaw Middle School Conference victory over Nakina Thursday.
White scored 8 of her game-high 14 points in the second half, and Ratliff threw in 6 of her 10 points after intermission. Gabby Nealy tossed in 7 points for the Lady Blue Devils, and Addie Bowen finished with 6 points.
J. Turbevile scored all 9 of her points in the first quarter as the Lady Mustangs grabbed an 11-6 lead. Baskets by Nealy and Bowen and 2 Ratliff free throws kept Clarkton close.
White fired in 3 baskets in the second quarter. Bowen netted a basket, and Ratliff sank 2 more free throws as the Lady Blue Devils edged in front 16-15 at halftime.
Ratliff worked inside for 2 baskets and 2 free throws in the third period. White pumped in 2 baskets, and Nealy and Bowen added a basket each to open up a 30-21 lead.
White popped in 2 more baskets in the final quarter, and Nealy delivered a basket and a free throw.
Coach Chris Callihan’s Lady Blue Devils improved to 2-0 on the season and will play Elizabethtown Monday in the opening round of the Bladen County Tournament at Bladenboro.
