ELIZABETHTOWN – Alexus Mitchell sparked a 7-1 closing run that propelled Elizabethtown to a 21-16 Bladen Five Middle School Conference girls basketball victory over Clarkton School of Discovery Tuesday night.

Clarkton held a slim 15-14 lead after 3 quarters, but Mitchell fired in 2 baskets and a free throw in the final period, and teammate Ronkira Lennon dropped in a basket. AnnaGrey Heustess hit a free throw for the Clarkton point.

Lennon led the Elizabethtown scoring with 11 points, and Mitchell followed her closely with 10 points. Heustess topped the Clarkton scoring with 8 points, and teammates Maegan Burney and Mariah Smith added 4 points each.

Heustess pumped in 2 baskets and 2 free throws in the opening period as the Lady Blue Devils took an 8-5 lead. Burney tallied the other Clarkton basket in the quarter.

Mitchell popped in a basket and a free throw, and Lennon flipped in a basket for the Lady Cougar points in the period. Lennon contributed a pair of second quarter baskets, and Mitchell tossed in a basket to narrow the lead to 12-11 at halftime.

Smith and Burney scored baskets in the second period to keep Clarkton ahead. Smith threw in a basket in the third quarter, and Heustess made a free throw to keep the Lady Blue Devils up 15-14. Lennon sank a basket and a free throw for Elizabethtown in the third quarter.

It was the season opener for Elizabethtown, while Clarkton is now 1-1 on the season.
