TAR HEEL – Elizabethtown raced to a 17-2 halftime lead en route to a 23-7 Waccamaw Middle School Conference girls basketball victory over Tar Heel Thursday.

Iveonna Ward drained a 3-point shot and another basket as the Lady Cougars built a 9-2 first quarter lead. Lainey Hughes threw in a basket, and Zoe Smith sank 2 free throws.

Azillyah McDonald connected for the only Tar Heel basket in the opening period.

Zoe Smith, Laila Smith and Calise Jackson threw in baskets for Elizabethtown in the second period, and Jackson and Brianna Phillips tossed in free throws as the Lady Cougar lead grew to 17-2.

Hughes and Laila Smith pumped in third quarter baskets as the Elizabethtown lead grew to 21-2. Zoe Smith scored the final Lady Cougar basket.

Tiannah Willis and Len’ya Harrell made free throws for the Lady Panthers in the final quarter, and Harrell beat the buzzer with a 3-point basket.

Zoe Smith led the Elizabethtown scoring with 6 points. Calise Jackson pumped in 5 points, and Hughes and Laila Smith followed with 4 points each.

Harrell topped the Tar Heel scoring with 4 points.
