ELIZABETHTOWN – Iveonna Ward and Laila Smith combined for 19 points Monday to lead Elizabethtown to a 27-24 Waccamaw Middle School Conference girls basketball victory over Clarkton School of Discovery.

Ward and Clarkton’s Maegan Burney threw in 2 baskets each in the first quarter as the teams battled to a 6-6 tie.

Laila Smith and Zoe Smith fired in 2 baskets each to spark a 10-2 Lady Cougar second-period run that produced a 16-8 halftime lead. Ward added a basket to the spurt. Burney and AnnaGrey Heustess made one free throw each for the Lady Blue Devil points in the quarter.

Heustess tossed in 5 free throws in the third period, and Shy’Asia Ratliff dropped in a basket as Clarkton whittled the margin to 22-15. Ward pumped in 2 baskets, and Lainey Hughes netted a basket to keep Elizabethtown on top.

Clarkton rallied in the final quarter as Heustess drained 6 of 7 free throws and added a basket. Laila Smith cashed in 3 of 4 of foul shots and popped in another basket to keep the Lady Cougars ahead.

Ward led the Elizabethtown scoring with 10 points, and Laila Smith followed with 9 points. Zoe Smith finished with 6 points.

Heustess topped all scorers with 15 points for Clarkton. Burney totaled 5 points.

Coach Chris Davisson’s Lady Cougars improved to 2-0 with the victory and will travel to Williams Tuesday. Clarkton is now 2-1 and will host Hallsboro Tuesday.
