Patience Ward fired in 16 of her game-high 21 points in the second half as Elizabethtown rallied for a 30-21 Bladen Five Middle School Conference girls basketball victory at Tar Heel Thursday.

Tar Heel’s Claudia Cuc-Reyes threw in a pair of 3-point shots in the first quarter, and teammate Jessica Labra drained a 3-point shot and another basket as the Lady Panthers built an early 12-4 lead.

Ward rallied the Lady Cougars with 2 baskets and a free throw in the second quarter, and Chasity Carter tossed in a basket as Elizabethtown whittled Tar Heel’s halftime lead to 15-11. Labra bombed in another 3-pointer to keep the Lady Panthers on top.

Ward cranked the Lady Cougar offense into high gear with 4 third quarter baskets, and Carter hit a free throw. Labra buried a 3-pointer for Tar Heel, and Shelby Pharr dropped in a basket to keep the score tied 20-20 at the quarter break.

Ward delivered 4 more baskets to spark a 10-1 closing run that carried the Lady Cougars to the victory. Lavada Jackson tacked on another basket for Elizabethtown. Shaunessy McMillan sank a free throw for the final Tar Heel point.

Labra topped the Tar Heel scoring with 11 points, and Cuc-Reyes finished with 7 points.

The Lady Cougars evened their record at 2-2 on the season.
