Patience Ward lit up the scoreboard with 21 points Thursday to lead Elizabethtown to a 31-17 Bladen Five Middle School Conference girls basketball victory over Clarkton School of Discovery that gave the Lady Cougars a share of the league regular-season title.

The victory moved Coach Eric Hines’ Elizabethtown squad into a first-place tie with Clarkton and Bladenboro. All 3 teams finished the season with 4-2 records, and all 3 teams are Tri-Champions.

Ward threw in a pair of first quarter baskets, and teammate Magdiel Gonzalez added a bucket to give the Lady Cougars a 6-4 lead.

Khadijah Jones and Abbie Cross tossed in 2 points each for Clarkton in the quarter.

Ward pumped in a trio of baskets in the second quarter, and teammate Lavada Jackson tallied a basket that stretched the Lady Cougar halftime lead to 14-6. Jones scored the only Clarkton basket in the period.

Six more points from Ward and another basket from Jackson increased the Elizabethtown lead to 22-10 in the third period. Jones tallied all 4 points for Clarkton in the quarter.

Ward racked up 5 more points in the fourth quarter, and baskets by Chasity Carter and Cheylee Mathis kept the Lady Cougar lead from shrinking.

Jones connected for 5 points in the final period and led the Lady Blue Devil scoring with 13 points. Lauren Bowen scored the other 2 points for Clarkton in the quarter.

Jackson finished with 4 points for the winners.

After the game a coin flip was held to determine seeding for next week’s tournament at Bladenboro. The host Lady Bulldogs will be the top seed. Clarkton will be the No. 2 seed and will get a rematch with No. 3 Elizabethtown on Monday.
