NAKINA – Iveonna Ward fired in 19 points Monday to lead Elizabethtown to a 40-14 Waccamaw Middle School Conference girls basketball victory over Nakina.

Ward filled up the rim with a trio of first quarter baskets, and Lainey Hughes made a free throw as the Lady Cougars built a 7-2 lead.

Laila Smith, Hughes, and Ward threw in 2 baskets each in the second period, and Zoe Smith tossed in a basket as the Elizabethtown lead grew to 21-8 at halftime.

Hughes pumped in 2 baskets in the third quarter, and Ward and Zoe Smith tacked on baskets as the Lady Cougars widened the gap to 29-14.

Ward sparked an 11-0 Elizabethtown closing run with 3 baskets and a free throw. Teammate Laila Smith popped in 2 more baskets in the final period.

Hughes finished with 9 points for the Lady Cougars, and Laila Smith followed with 8 points. Hailey Ward and Kaylee Etheridge scored 6 points each for Nakina.

Coach Chris Davisson’s Lady Cougars improved to 5-2 and will travel to Hallsboro Tuesday.
