ELIZABETHTOWN – Elizabethtown’s Lady Cougars defeated Tar Heel 41-6 Tuesday in Waccamaw Middle School Conference girls basketball action.

Lainey Hughes and Zoe Smith threw in 2 baskets each in the opening quarter as the Lady Cougars raced to a 12-2 lead. Teammates Iveonna Ward and Brianna Phillips tossed in a basket each in the period, while Kiera Lewis dropped in the Tar Heel basket.

Hughes canned 2 baskets and a free throw in the Elizabethtown second quarter. Laila Smith popped in 2 baskets as the lead grew to 21-4 at halftime. Harmony Jacobs pumped in a basket for the Lady Panthers.

Laila Smith blistered the nets with 3 baskets and 2 free throws in the third quarter, and Zoe Smith buried a pair of baskets. Hughes and Mary Frances Sutton hurled in baskets as the lead stretched to 37-6. Len’ya Harrell connected for the final Tar Heel basket.

La’Tosha Melvin and Zoe Smith scored the final Lady Cougar baskets.

Laila Smith led the Lady Cougars with 12 points. Hughes racked up 11 points, and Zoe Smith followed with 10 points.

Coach Chris Davisson’s Lady Cougars improved to 6-4 on the season and will host Whiteville Central on February 14th. Tar Heel, now 2-7, will travel to Clarkton School of Discovery Thursday.
