TAR HEEL – Iveonna Ward poured in 24 points to lead Elizabethtown to a 45-21 Waccamaw Middle School Conference girls basketball victory over Tar Heel Tuesday.

Ward threw in 2 baskets and a free throw to lead the Lady Cougars to an early 11-2 lead. Laila Smith, Ariel Cromartie and Shabrea Geathers popped in a basket each for Elizabethtown. Kiera Lewis scored the first Tar Heel basket.

Ward blistered the nets with 3 baskets and a free throw in the second quarter. Laila Smith and Arelia Lewis pumped in a basket each as the Lady Cougar lead grew to 22-6. Alina Chavez and Sherlyn Martinez delivered a basket each for Tar Heel.

Laila Smith dropped in 2 baskets for Elizabethtown in the third period, but Ward netted 3 more baskets and a free throw as the lead grew to 34-14. Kiera Lewis and Violet Allen nailed 3-point shots for Tar Heel in the period, and Jahyrah Priest flipped in a basket.

Ward capped her performance with 2 field goals in the final quarter. Zoe Smith sank 2 free throws and a basket, and Laila Smith added a basket and a free throw. Kiera Lewis bombed in another 3-ball for Tar Heel. Chavez canned 2 free throws, and Tah’Leyeh Singletary drilled in a basket.

Laila Smith followed Ward on the Elizabethtown scoring list with 11 points, and Zoe Smith added 4 points. Kiera Lewis led Tar Heel with 8 points, and Chavez totaled 4 points.

Coach Cedric Owens’ Lady Cougars improved to 6-1in Waccamaw AA Division play and 8-1 overall.
