ELIZABETHTOWN – Iveonna Ward and Laila Smith combined for 30 points Thursday to lead Elizabethtown to a 46-4 Waccamaw Middle School Conference girls’ basketball victory over Tar Heel.

Ward drove to the hoop for 4 baskets in the opening quarter, and Laila Smith threw in 2 baskets and 3 free throws as the Lady Cougars raced to a 23-2 lead. Zoe Smith tossed in 2 baskets, and Ariel Cromartie,and Niyah Wooten pumped in a basket each.

Ward racked up 4 more baskets in the second quarter, teammate Mary Frances Sutton tossed in a basket, and Laila Smith made a free throw as the lead grew to 34-2. Sheryln Martinez scored the Tar Heel basket.

Sarah Dillard sank the other Lady Panther basket in the third quarter. Cromartie popped in 2 baskets, and Laila Smith cashed in a free throw and another basket to push the lead to 41-4.

Laila Smith tallied 3 more points in the final period, and Cromartie netted a basket.
Ward led all scorers with 16 points, and Laila Smith followed with 14 points. Cromartie totaled 8 points.

It was the season opener for the Lady Cougars who will play Clarkton School of Discovery Monday at Bladenboro in the Bladen County Tournament. Tar Heel, now 0-2, will play at Bladenboro Tuesday in the Bladen Tournament.
