HALLSBORO – Hallsboro rode a 7-2 third-quarter spurt to an 18-16 Waccamaw Middle School Conference girls basketball victory over Elizabethtown.
Zoe Smith tossed in a pair of first period baskets as the Lady Cougars grabbed an early 4-2 lead. Iveonna Ward dropped in a second-quarter basket to keep Elizabethtown on top 6-5 at halftime.
Center Harmony Sumerville threw in a trio of third-quarter baskets to spark the Lady Tigers to a 12-8 lead. Laila Smith pumped in the only Elizabethtown basket in the quarter.
A pair of Sumerville free throws and baskets by Karli Godwin and Chay Patrick kept Hallsboro on top. Lainey Hughes, Ward, Zoe Smith and Laila Smith rallied the Lady Cougars with a basket each.
Zoe Smith led the Lady Cougars with 6 points, and Ward and Laila Smith added 4 points each. Sumerville topped all scorers with 8 points for Hallsboro, and Godwin totaled 5 points.
The Lady Cougars, now 5-3, will host Tar Heel Tuesday.
