CLARKTON – Brianna Price and Morgan Boyd scored 9 points each to lead Nakina to a 24-21 Waccamaw Middle School Conference ‘A’ Division girls’ basketball victory over Clarkton School of Discovery Monday.
Tyliah Freeman topped all scorers with 10 points for the Lady Blue Devils, and guard Montiera Richardson tossed in 6 points and had a team-high 6 steals.
Richardson banked in a 3-point shot, and Freeman popped in a 15-footer to start the game. Ellie Kinlaw’s rebound basket pushed the Clarkton lead to 7-0. Richardson followed up her own miss with a bucket that kept the margin at 9-4. Nakina closed to within 9-8 at halftime.
Freeman sank a free throw, and Nevaeh Brown’s rebound basket kept the Lady Blue Devils on top 12-11 at the 3rd quarter break. Riley Suggs canned a 15-footer to vault the Lady Mustangs in front, but a Freeman free throw tied the game 13-13.
Four points from Phillips helped Nakina build a 19-13 lead. Freeman answered with a baseline runner then sank 2 foul shots to close the gap to 20-17 with 1:43 left. Brown made a free throw, before Freeman nailed a 3-point shot to whittle the lead to 22-21 with 58 seconds remaining. A pair of Boyd free throws with 41 seconds left padded the Nakina lead.
Nakina connected on 10 of 18 foul shots, while Clarkton made 3 of their 6 free throw attempts. Brown pulled down 11 rebounds and had 3 steals to go with her 3 points. Freeman grabbed 7 rebounds, and Kinlaw and Aniya Willis snared 4 rebounds each.
It was the first conference loss for the Lady Blue Devils who remain on top of the ‘A’ Division with a 5-1 league record and are 7-2 overall. Clarkton will entertain Bladenboro Tuesday.
