CERRO GORDO – Karla Mejia posted a ‘Hat Trick’ of 3 goals Monday to lead Tar Heel to a 5-1 Waccamaw Middle School ‘AA’ Conference girls’ soccer victory over West Columbus.

Coach Brett Jackson’s Lady Panthers won the Waccamaw’s ‘AA’ Conference championship with a perfect 8-0 record in conference play. Tar Heel finished with an 8-1 overall record.

Karla Mejia banged in an early goal Monday, and Kathrine Mejia knocked in another goal 5 minutes later for a 2-0 Tar Heel lead. West Columbus trimmed the lead to 2-1 five minutes before halftime.

Karla Mejia drilled in a goal early in the 2nd half to extend the Lady Panther lead to 3-1. With 10 minutes left to play, Oasis De La Cruz Labra fired in a goal to pad the lead to 4-1. Karla Mejia hammered in a penalty kick with 5 minutes remaining to complete her ‘Hat Trick.’

“After a tough loss to Clarkton Thursday, the girls came out today ready to play,” said Coach Jackson. “It was probably the best they have played all year. It was a great way to finish out the season and clinch 1st place in the AA conference.”

Jackson added, “I am extremely proud of the way the girls played today as well as all season. It’s the first time in school history that the girls’ soccer team came in first place, not to mention going undefeated in conference play. As a coach you couldn’t ask for a better group of girls.”
