When Elizabethtown defeated Clarkton School of Discovery in Bladen Five Middle School Conference boys soccer action on November 30, we reported that it was believed to be the first soccer victory ever for Elizabethtown over Clarkton.

Turns out that it was not. Bladen County Recreation Program Coordinator Dom Whittington shared that when he was in 8th grade he played on an Elizabethtown soccer team that defeated Clarkton 2-1 during the 2002-2003 season.

“It was in the very first year the school changed its’ name when they moved into the old high school,” said Whittington. “Clarkton beat Elizabethtown 2-1 in the first game that season, but Elizabethtown won the second game.”

Dom scored the only Elizabethtown goal in the first game then scored the first Cougar goal in the second meeting. Tony Ventura scored the other goal for Elizabethtown. Tripp Lancaster scored the only Clarkton goal in that second game.

Since the two teams split their two games that season and beat everybody else, they shared the Bladen Five Championship with identical 7-1 records – East Arcadia had a team that year so it was an 8-game schedule.

Robert Mazur coached the Elizabethtown co-champions that season.

Although our original information was incorrect, bladenonline is thankful that we received more complete information and was able to recognize that 2002 team’s accomplishment.
