CLARKTON – Elizabethtown built a 13-2 lead then held off a furious Clarkton School of Discovery rally to claim a 14-13 Bladen Five Middle School Conference softball victory Tuesday.  The game was halted by time limit after six innings.

The Lady Cougars jumped in front 5-0 in the top of the first. Shanell McMillian was hit by a pitch, Abigail Madden and Cheylee Mathis drew walks and Kayleigh Raynor cleaned the bases with a 3-run double. Raynor and Alyssa Suggs both scored when Chasity Carter slammed a 2-run double.

Alyssa Futrell was hit by a pitch in the Clarkton first inning and came around to score. QuaDasia Monroe scored another run as the Lady Blue Devils pulled to within 5-2.

McMillian led off the Elizabethtown second inning with a single, Madden was hit by a pitch and Mathis knocked in both runners with a single. Raynor walked, and both Mathis and Raynor came around to score as the Lady Cougar lead grew to 9-2.

Madden and Raynor reached base in the Elizabethtown fourth inning, and Suggs hammered a double to drive both of them in. Suggs later scored to pad the Lady Cougar lead to 12-2.

McMillian was hit by a pitch in the Elizabethtown fifth, and Madden smacked a single to drive her in and push the lead to 13-2.

Clarkton answered with 4 runs in the home fifth. Izzy Smith belted a single, and Smith, Abbie Cross, Khadijah Jones and Futrell all scored runs to trim the margin to 13-6.

Raynor circled the bases to begin the Lady Cougar sixth inning and stretch the Elizabethtown lead to 14-6.

Smith walloped a double to ignite a 7-run Lady Blue Devil rally in the bottom of the sixth. Smith, Cross, Johanna Parker, Jones, Futrell, Gracyn Martin, and Alayna Weeks all scored runs for Clarkton in the inning.

Raynor struck out 3 Clarkton batters and picked up the pitching victory. Lauren Bowen struck out 6 Lady Cougars for Clarkton.

Raynor blasted the double, scored 4 runs and knocked in three. Suggs delivered a 2-run double and scored twice. Carter cracked a 2-run double.

Mathis, Madden and McMillian connected for one hit each for the winners. McMillian and Madden scored 3 runs each. Mathis scored 2 runs and drove in two. Madden had a run batted in.

Smith led the Clarkton hitters with a double and a single and 2 runs scored. Futrell scored 3 runs, Jones and Cross scored 2 runs each, and Parker, Martin, Monroe and Weeks scored one run each.

Coach Tarrah Woodruff’s Lady Cougars lead the Bladen Five with a 2-0 record and will host Bladenboro Thursday. Clarkton, now 1-1, will travel to Tar Heel Thursday.
