EVERGREEN – Elizabethtown exploded for 16 runs in the first inning and cruised to a 20-2 Waccamaw Middle School Conference season-opening softball victory over West Columbus Thursday.

The first 6 batters of the game – Iveonna Ward, Mary Francis Sutton, Zoe Smith, Laila Smith, Niyah Wooten and Hailey Bennett – all reached base and scored runs. Two outs later 10 consecutive Lady Cougars batters – Madilyn Hall, Ward, Sutton, Zoe Smith, Laila Smith, Wooten, Bennett, Brianna Wuergler, Shabrea Geathers and Hall – all reached base and scored runs.

Elizabethtown scored 4 more runs in the 2nd inning. Zoe Smith, Laila Smith, Wooten, Ariel Cromartie all reached base to start the inning and scored runs to stretch the lead to 20-0.

The Lady Warriors scored their 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. The game was halted after 3 innings by the mercy rule.

Sutton pitched all 3 innings for Elizabethtown, striking out 2 batters and only allowing 3 base-runners.

Zoe Smith, Laila Smith, and Wooten scored 3 runs each. Ward, Sutton, Bennett and Hall scored 2 runs each, and Cromartie, Wuergler and Geathers scored 1 run each.
