BLADENBORO – Clarkton School of Discovery defeated Bladenboro 2-0 Tuesday by set scores of 25-5, 25-19 and 15-8 in the Bladen Five Middle School Conference volleyball opener for both teams.

Lauren Bowen served up the first Lady Blue Devil point of the season, and teammate Tara Rogers nailed a winning return then scored again after a spectacular hit by Katie Evans.

Khadijah Jones delivered 5 straight service points for CSD, and Alyssa Futrell reeled off 5 more as Clarkton opened up a 13-3 lead. Lily Lin tallied 4 straight service points, and Bowen knocked in a winner to stretch the lead to 18-4. Evans closed out the set with six straight service points.

Rogers smacked a winning return to claim the serve for Clarkton at the start of the second set. Sara Gargala tallied a service point then slammed in a winner off of a set by Jones.

Rogers fired in an ace and 3 more service points, and Emma Turbeville stretched the Lady Blue Devil lead to 15-5 with six straight service points. Jones and Futrell added service points to keep the margin at 19-10.

Gargala scored 3 straight service points, and Heather Hardin cracked a winning return. Gargala belted a winning return to end the set.

Lauren Gooden began the third set with a return winner for the Lady Blue Devils. Turbeville followed with a pair of service winners.

Merritt Martin drilled in an ace for Clarkton, and teammate Maegan Burney hammered in an ace and 3 more service points.

Clarkton Coach Chris Callihan was pleased with the victory and also praised AnnaGrey Heustess for her fine defensive play.

In Tuesday’s opening match, Tar Heel Middle defeated East Arcadia 2-0.
