Clarkton School of Discovery defeated Elizabethtown 3-0 in Bladen Five Middle School Conference volleyball action Tuesday at East Arcadia by game scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 15-4.

In the first set, the teams traded side-outs before Elizabethtown reeled off 4 straight service points that included one ace to take a 5-1 lead.

Cybil Campbell would score Clarkton’s second point on a great return. Elizabethtown scored their sixth point on a failed return from Clarkton. Adrienne Howell would tie the score at 6 with three service points for the Blue Devils.

With Elizabethtown leading 9-7, Alyssa Futrell delivered a nice return and followed with 2 service points to give Clarkton their first lead of the game 10-9. The score went back and forth with neither team able to gain more than a one-point lead until Gracyn Martin nailed a great return to give Clarkton a 16-14 lead.

Howell stretched the lead to 21-14 with 5 straight service points. Return points by Futrell and Ruth Ward and a service point from Ward gave Clarkton a 25-16 victory.

In the second set, Martin knocked in her first three serves with one ace, giving Clarkton the early 3-0 lead.  Howell would add another service point to keep CSD on top at 7-4.

After Elizabethtown tied the score at 7-7, Khadijah Jones made a great return and Lily Lin’s service point put the Devils out in front 9-7.  Ward extended Clarkton’s lead to 12-8, with two service points. Another return point from Jones and two service points from Martin gave Clarkton the 15-10 lead.

A return point from Martin and a service point from Jones made the score 17-11. Lin’s return point pushed the margin to 18-12. Later Lin contributed another return and service point, making the score 21-17 Clarkton.

Martin and Howell would each get return points and Ward would tally a service point to give Clarkton the 24-19 lead. A side out by Elizabethtown would give Clarkton the 25-21 victory.

In the third game, Elizabethtown would take an early 2-1 lead before another spectacular return point from Lin and 6 service points with one ace from Futrell vaulted Clarkton ahead 8-2.

Lauren Bowen slammed in a kill, and Sara Gargala ran off 4 straight service points to extend Clarkton’s lead to 13-4.  A side out from Elizabethtown and a service point by Bowen sealed the match for Clarkton, 15-4.

Clarkton finished the season undefeated at 4-0 and will be the top seed in next Tuesday’s Bladen Five Volleyball Tournament at Bladenboro Middle School. Elizabethtown finished 3-1 in the league and will be the No. 2 seed in the tournament.
