East Bladen’s Eagles rode a 22-5 second-quarter spurt to a 33-20 halftime lead en route to a 60-53 boys basketball victory over Topsail Monday in the MLK Jam at Union High School.

Sophomore Ethan Hines fired in 11 of his game-high 16 points during the second period run. Hines drilled in a 3-point shot then slammed in a dunk to cap the run.

Senior Farrell Murchison drained a 3-point shot and added another basket to the pivotal run. Murchison and sophomore Eian Hines, Ethan’s brother, both finished with 15 points for the winners.

“We picked up our defense in the second quarter and played harder,” said Eagle Coach Ken Cross. “Topsail cut it down to three in the third quarter, before we tightened up our defense again.”

Farrell Murchison pumped in 10 points in the third period as the Eagles built the lead back to 47-33 after holding off the Pirate rally.

Eian Hines nailed 3-point shots in the first and fourth quarters and tallied 6 points in the final quarter to help keep the Eagles on top.

Jake Sullivan, a 6-6 senior, led the Pirate scoring with 13 points.
