CURRIE — It’s been almost 247 years since a group of Loyalists charges across a partially dismantled Moores Creek Bridge as nearly 1,000 North Carolina Patriots waited quietly with cannons and muskets poised to fire. This battle marked the last broadsword charge by Scottish Highlanders and the first significant victory for the Patriots in the American Revolution.

The battle took place in the early morning hours of February 27, 1776.

On February 25-26, Moores Creek National Battlefield will commemorate the 247th anniversary of the Battle of Moores Creek Bridge. Park staff, partners, volunteers, and other living historians will offer a variety of programs and demonstrations throughout the weekend. Events are free and open to the public.

The weekend events are scheduled to begin Saturday, February 25 at 10 a.m. with a wreath laying ceremony that will remember the lives of those who fell during the battle.

Demonstrations and programs will include battle commemoration programs at noon and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. Sunday, performances by the Tryon Palace Fife and Drum Corps on Saturday and the Wilmington Police Pipes and Drums on Sunday. There also will be playing with 18th century toys and games, blacksmithing, candle making, Loyalist and Patriot programs, guest speakers and guided tours.

A full listing of events can be found on the park website at www.nps.gov/mocr or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/moorescreeknps.
