HICKORY – Bladenboro native Morgan Sweeney ripped a double and a single in the first game of Wednesday’s double-header, but her Newberry Lady Wolves were edged 7-6 by South Atlantic Conference leader Lenoir Rhyne.
Sweeney laced a single to centerfield in the second inning to load the bases, but Lenoir Rhyne retired the next two batters to end the inning.
In the third inning, Sweeney ripped a double down the leftfield line to drive in Mallory Gendt and cap a 4-run Newberry rally that vaulted the Lady Wolves in front 4-3.
Newberry extended the lead to 6-3, but Lenoir Rhyne fought back with a run in the fifth, two in the sixth and the winning run in the seventh.
Lenoir Rhyne took the second game Wednesday 8-0.
Newberry, now 22-12, is scheduled to host Carson-Newman Sunday in a double-header beginning at 1:30 p.m.
