MurderYesterday was another busy day in Bladen County Superior Court and a murderer was sent to prison. Kelvin Donta McKeithan, 34 years of age, pled guilty to charges of First-Degree Kidnapping and Second-Degree Murder, which occurred on May 3rd, 2014 in Clarkton, NC, at the Defendant’s home.

On that date, McKeithan beat his girlfriend, Mary Council, to death with a wooden cane according to the District Attorney’s office.

According to facts given in the court room McKeithan took his girlfriend, Mary Council to his home in Clarkton, shot her with a high powered pellet gun, and then beat her with a wooden cane until the cane was in pieces. After he was finished he then drove Ms. Council to the hospital, dropped her off, and left the scene. Ms. Council was found dead on arrival.

The victim’s family spoke before Judge Douglas Sasser gave his sentence. The victim’s mother, Eva Leach asked, “Why did he want to murder my daughter? He didn’t have to do that.”

Ms. Council’s brother and niece also gave emotional statements. Ms. Shipman, Council’s niece said she now has to be the mother to her aunt’s two sons. She said, “I hate him. He took her from me and I don’t understand. I wake up in tears.” Defense Attorney McGuiness said McKeithan did not want to address the court.

The defendant accepted a plea deal with the District Attorney according to McKeithan’s attorney. He was sentenced by Judge Sasser to 30 – 38 years in the Department of Adult Corrections.

The case was investigated by Detective Morgan Johnson, with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Glenn Emery. “We make our decisions on the facts and the law. We consulted with the victim’s family. It may be a life sentence for him. He should serve at least 35 years of the maximum sentence” Emery said.
