The new bridges crossing the Cape Fear River on NC 11 in eastern Bladen County are now open and traffic is flowing well.

According to the NC Department of Transportation’s website, the original truss bridge on NC 11 was constructed about 1952 and was one of only two examples of a Pennsylvania Truss Bridge in North Carolina. The other example of a Pennsylvania Truss Bridge in the state is found in Henderson County and has been preserved and taken out of service, according to NC DOT’s website.

The demolition work continues on the old roadway and the old truss bridge is now resting on a barge in the river awaiting further action.
