CARTHAGE – Lumberton pushed across the winning run in the eighth inning to defeat West Stanly 9-8 Monday in the North Carolina Dixie Debs State Tournament.

With the victory Lumberton advances to Tuesday’s 4 p.m. championship game against South Columbus. Lumberton needs a win to force a second and final championship game that would be played Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Lumberton jumped in front with a 4-run first inning. Carley Dawson walked and scored a run. Conner Brisson reached base on an overthrow and scored when Abby Dawson smacked a single to leftfield.

West Stanley rallied with 3 runs in the second and 3 more in the third to go up 6-5. Their lead grew to 8-5 in the fifth before Lumberton pulled even with a 3-run sixth inning.

In her second at-bat, Carley Dawson pounded a double to deep leftfield to drive in a run and later scored. In her third at-bat, she knocked in a run with a single and later scored. Carley Dawson batted 2-2 with the double, 3 runs scored and 2 runs batted in.

Brisson slammed a double to deep rightfield in her third at-bat to drive in a run and later scored her second run of the game.

Abby Dawson finished with the rbi single and also reached base on an error.
