CARTHAGE – South Columbus defeated Lumberton 6-1 Saturday in the opening round of the Dixie Debs State Softball Tournament.
Four West Bladen softball players are members of the Lumberton team – first baseman Carley Dawson, shortstop Conner Brisson, second baseman Abby Dawson and right fielder Madison Collins.
South Columbus scored 2 runs in the first inning, one in the second and pulled away with 3 runs in the sixth.
Brisson led off the second inning with a single to centerfield and came around to score the lone Lumberton run. Brisson batted 2-3 and also stole a base. Abby Dawson cracked a single and finished 1-2 at the plate.
Morgan Britt pitched a complete game for Lumberton.
Lumberton will play the loser of the West Stanly/Brunswick North game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
