CARTHAGE – South Columbus slugged 2 home runs and captured the North Carolina Dixie Debs State Softball Tournament Tuesday night with a 6-5 victory over Lumberton.
A 3-run first-inning homer staked the winners to an early 3-0 lead. South Columbus built their lead to 6-3 in the fifth then survived a 2-run last-inning rally by Lumberton.
Firstbaseman Carley Dawson batted 2-2 and scored 2 runs for Lumberton. She walked in her second trip to the plate and scored then belted a single and scored in her final at-bat.
Shortstop Conner Brisson walked in her second trip to the plate, stole second and third bases then scored on Katie Kinlaw’s single.
Morgan Britt pitched all 7 innings for Lumberton. The game started at 4 p.m. and finally finished at 9 p.m. due to several lightning delays.
