KENANSVILLE – Columbus County defeated Elizabethtown 4-1 Monday night in an elimination game in the North Carolina State Dixie Youth Baseball Tournament.

Elizabethtown grabbed a 1-0 first-inning lead. Hunter Elks cracked a one-out single to centerfield, and Carson Gooden ripped a single to left-centerfield that sent Elks to third base. Elks raced home on Lee Barnes’ sacrifice.

Columbus County capitalized on a trio of errors to score 3 unearned runs in the third inning then tacked on a run in the fifth inning.

Hunter Smith started on the mound for Elizabethtown and pitched 4.1 innings allowing 4 runs – one earned – on no hits, 2 walks and 3 hit batters while striking out eight. Gooden relieved in the fifth inning and recorded the final two outs.

Elks and Gooden connected for one hit each for Elizabethtown. Elks scored the run, and Barnes drove in the run.
