RALEIGH, N.C. – In honor of Military Appreciation month and upcoming Memorial Day, the North Carolina National Guard conducted a groundbreaking ceremony today to begin construction on a Gold Star Family Memorial, at Joint Force Headquarters.

The Adjutant General of North Carolina, Maj. Gen. Greg Lusk, and other Guard officers, enlisted Soldiers and Airmen and civilian employees gathered together to witness the groundbreaking and pay tribute to Gold Star Families who lost loved ones in defense of our freedom and security.

The goal of the NCNG Gold Star Family Memorial is to bring awareness to what a Gold Star Family is and to honor our fallen heroes loved ones. The memorial will stand outside NCNG headquarters gate and will be open to the public so all may honor the sacrifice that Gold Star Family members make when a father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter, or other loved one dies in service to the nation.

The Gold Star Family Memorial was created by Medal of Honor Recipient Hershel “Woody’ Williams to remember those families who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
