There were several passionate points made regarding the newest changes to the proposed Social Studies Standards. Some issues with the new standards were labeled “Anti-American”, “Anti-Capitalism” and “Dismantling Democracy.”

According to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, in April 2019 the State Board of Education for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) approved the request from the Division of Standards, Curriculum, and Instruction to begin the process of “review” and possible “revision” of the current K-12 Social Studies academic standards. According to the NCDPI the revisions are part of the State Board of Education (SBE) Policy SCOS-012.

Since July 2020, the NCDPI has been working on Draft 3 for the Social Studies Standards. In January the new Standard drafts were released.
