The Fayetteville Police Department’s Homicide Unit announced a shooting in February with information searching for the suspect. The crimes committed left a father injured and a brother dead. First Sergeant Andrew Pait with the North Carolina Highway Patrol in Bladen and Columbus County commended Trooper J.C. Freeman for the suspect’s apprehension. 

The Fayetteville Police Department reported on February 24, 2022, at 6:17 pm, officers with the Fayetteville Police Department responded to a reported shooting along the 4600 block of Fen Court. The investigation revealed an altercation between these family members occurred inside the home before the shooting. 

Claude James Farrington, 30 years of age, of Fen Court in Fayetteville, is the case’s suspect but was not apprehended at the scene. The victims identified in the crime report are Claude James’ father and brother. The father, 73 years old, Claude Farrington, of Fen Court, was injured and treated for injuries at an area hospital. The brother, 27-year-old Perry Farrington, of Forrest Gump Drive in Fayetteville, was pronounced deceased at the hospital. 

According to F/Sgt. Andrews, Trooper Freeman responded to a call about a potential motor vehicle collision near NC Highway 87 on East Arcadia Road on February 24. Upon arrival, Trooper Freeman found a Toyota Camry on the side of the road matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle in the Fayetteville shooting case. 

Trooper Freeman called in for the information, and Elizabethtown Communication confirmed the vehicle, the plate number, and the subject’s description matched the description given in the Fayetteville crime report. Trooper Freeman proceeded with the felony stop giving the suspect behind the wheel loud verbal commands. 

Trooper Freeman took the murder suspect, Claude James Farrington, into custody without incident. 

“If it were not for Trooper Freeman, this suspect would not have been apprehended. I want to commend him for the part he played in this case,” F/Sgt. Andrews stated. 

Officers with the Fayetteville Police Department arrived on the scene and took Farrington into custody. According to the police department, Claude James Farrington of Fen Court was charged and arrested with First Degree Murder, Attempted First Degree Murder, and Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon. He remains in the Cumberland County Detention Center under no bond.

All suspects and persons charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
