RALEIGH – To increase safety for motorists in Bladen County, the N.C. Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to upgrade the intersection at N.C. 87 and U.S. 701 near Elizabethtown from an intersection with a traffic light to an interchange.

Just down the road from Elizabethtown Middle School, the U.S. 701 and N.C. 87 Bypass currently sees about 14,000 vehicles per day. This traffic volume along with other factors proved the need for safety improvement at this intersection.

Work can begin as early as this month. The road is expected to return to a new traffic flow in September 2017. Motorists should expect minor delays during the construction of the project due to lane closures and are encouraged to exercise caution while traveling through the project work zone.

The project was awarded to Barnhill Contracting Company of Rocky Mount, with a contract amount of $13.2 million.

This is one of four projects recently awarded for highway and bridge work across the state. Those contracts, awarded to the lowest bidder as required by state law, totaled $27.2 million, which was about the projected engineers’ estimate.
