The Bladen County side of N.C. 53 in White Oak has reopened, although portions across the Cumberland County line remain closed because of continued repairs, says Ken Clark, who is maintenance engineer for the Bladen County office of the N.C. Department of Transportation, while five roads in the county remain closed.

With the culvert replacement complete on N.C. 53 near White Oak, the traffic detour route for the Cumberland County closure has changed, Clark said, and drivers will follow State Road 1318 (River Road) in its entirety from N.C. 53 into Cumberland County.

Here is the latest as of Friday, Jan. 27 on Bladen County road closings:

** N.C. 242 closed in three locations: (1) South of State Road 1511 (Sweet Home Church Road) at Jones Lake; (2) North of State Road 1509 (Johnsontown Road); and (3) South of State Road 1508 (Lula Long Road). Work is underway at each location, Clark said. Lula Long Road is expected to reopen in about two weeks while the two other sites are expected to remain closed through the end of March. Detours are in place at each location.

** State Road 1003 (Twisted Hickory Road) —  Work is expected to be completed during the week of Feb. 6. The road is closed between N.C. 242 and State Road 1143 (Britt Road).

** State Road 1155 (Cromartie Road) – Work to replace a large culvert is expected to be complete in the next three to four weeks. The road is closed west of N.C. 87.

** State Road 1336 (Owen Hill Road) – The project has had to be re-bid because of a lack of available contractors. It likely will be June before the project is completed.

** State Road 1708 (Rosindale Road) – Work is expected to be completed late next week if it’s not too cold to apply asphalt. The road is closed between State Road 1777 (Old Tram Road) and State Road 1700 (Mercer Mill Road.)
