LUMBERTON – Last month’s postponed open house on widening Fayetteville Road in Robeson County is rescheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 23.

State transportation officials postponed the Sept. 11 meeting ahead of Hurricane Florence. The location and time for this month’s rescheduled meeting will be the same: the Bill Sapp Recreation Center, 1100 N. Cedar St. in Lumberton from 5 to 7 p.m.

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes reconstructing the road between Farringdom Street and East 22nd Street downtown into a four-lane road with a raised median. The design would improve safety and ease congestion. The 1.3-mile stretch of road now varies between two lanes and five lanes with an open center turn lane.

The city of Lumberton supports the plan, which would minimize negative impacts to adjoining businesses or properties along Fayetteville Road. The proposal received favorable scores and funding through the department’s Strategic Mobility Formula that prioritizes new highway projects based on safety, congestion, benefits and costs and local priorities.

During the informal meeting, people can review a preliminary design map, ask questions and submit comments about the proposal. More project details are available online.

Comments should be submitted by Tuesday, Nov. 6 to Craig Freeman, a Division 6 project engineer, at 910-364-0603; cafreeman2@ncdot.gov; or Highway Division 6, P.O. Box 1150, Fayetteville, N.C. 28302.

NCDOT will provide auxiliary aids and services under the Americans with Disabilities Act for disabled persons who wish to participate in this workshop. Anyone requiring special services should contact Tony Gallagher at 1598 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-1598; 919-707-6069; ormagallagher@ncdot.gov as early as possible so that arrangements can be made.
