Elizabethtown Mayor Sylvia Campbell said Monday the bridge over Cape Fear River and Turnbull is open and will remain open, Drew Cox, NCDOT district engineer, said the U.S. 701 bridge over the river in Elizabethtown will remain open until further notice.

Cox added that the bridge at Turnbull Creek on U.S. 701 is one lane, but it is safe to cross.

Cox also stressed that N.C. Department of Transportation still is in the process of assessing damage to roads. He said people do not need to be out on the roadways right now. He said with the flooding situation as it is, a road could be clear now and become impassable later.

Cox said people do not need to drive around barricades. The road may look OK to drive on but it may be unsafe.

Cox asked that people be patient as DOT crews and other emergency personnel work to ensure safety of folks and assess damage.
