Contractors for Columbus, Bladen and Robeson counties will start next week

WHITEVILLE – Contractors for the N.C. Department of Transportation will be collecting storm debris created by Hurricane Florence in Bladen, Columbus and Robeson counties this month.

People should have the material set out along the shoulder of the roadway by Monday, Nov. 26. Beginning that week, the contractors will begin making the collections. Tree limbs and other vegetative debris should be separated from construction and demolition-related material leftover from the September storm.

The contractors will make one sweep on each state-maintained roadway in the three southeastern North Carolina counties. Most of the towns in Bladen and Columbus counties are collecting their own storm debris, even on state-maintained roads, within their municipal boundaries. But in East Arcadia, Sandyfield, Bolton and Boardman, NCDOT contractors will collect the debris on state-maintained roads as well.

In Robeson County, only these three municipalities are collecting storm debris: Lumberton, Red Springs and Pembroke. In the other municipalities, NCDOT will do the storm collection.

Here are some other reminders:
• Do not place debris on the pavement or in the bottom of the ditch.
• The contractor will not cross onto private property to collect debris.
• When placing debris along the roadside, please note the location of power lines or overhanging trees that would prevent the contractor from reaching the debris; the boom trucks, which use a hydraulic crane, cannot operate under power lines or under low-hanging trees.
