NC DOTLAURINBURG — The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes improving sections of CSX railroad tracks in Scotland and Bladen counties to help alleviate rail congestion and accommodate for freight growth.
The department’s Rail Division would improve low-speed tracks connecting to other CSX lines east of Laurinburg and east of Bladenboro, as well as near East Arcadia in Bladen County. The three sections of tracks that would be improved total about 6.7 miles.
Part of a busy freight line between Wilmington and Charlotte, the tracks reduce the number of heavy trucks on state highways. The department would use a federal grant to improve the CSX tracks to reduce rail freight delays, improve air quality and lower highway congestion.
NCDOT will seek public input on the project Thursday, Aug. 31, at First United Methodist Church at 101 W. Church St. in Laurinburg. The informal meeting is from 5 to 7 p.m.
