Raleigh – Earlier today, the family of Senator Tony Rand announced his passing. Sen. Rand was first appointed to the Senate in 1981 and served as Democratic Senate Majority Leader from 2001 until 2009.  North Carolina Democratic Party Chairman Wayne Goodwin has released the following statement.

“The North Carolina Democratic Party is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Senator Tony Rand. When we served together in the legislature, I knew my long-time friend Senator Rand to be a powerful man: when he spoke, people listened. He also recognized the power of compromise and compassionate, yet firm leadership.

His work for our schools and universities will benefit students for generations to come and no one will forget his dry wit and political savvy. Our state is better off for his service and we are proud to celebrate his life.”
