DEEP RUN – Junior Callie Tyndall pitched a 5-hit shutout and struck out 6 batters to lead South Lenoir to a 9-0 victory over West Bladen in the opening round of the NCHSAA Class 2-A Softball Playoffs Tuesday night.

Makayla Sasnett led off the South 1st inning with a single to left and raced home on freshman Makenzie Herring’s double. Freshman Carley Boone rapped a single through the middle that scored Herring for a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Blue Devils tacked on 2 more runs in the 3rd. Herring reached on an error, and Boone singled. Tyndall ripped a double to left that scored both runners.

Senior Kiley Smith cracked a single to center to start the South 4th inning. Makayla Sasnett reached on an error that scored Smith then scored on Herring’s sacrifice bunt. Boone reached on an error, and Tyndall singled. A pair of stolen bases, a fielder’s choice and Payton Bryan’s RBI single stretched the lead to 8-0.

Senior Jordan Sasnett tripled and scored the final Lady Blue Devil run on Smith’s sacrifice fly in the 5th inning.

The Lady Knights threatened in the 6th inning. Senior Mackenzie Singletary belted a single to center field, and senior Rylee Chadwick lined a single to right that sent Jahyrah Priest, the courtesy runner for Singletary to 3rd base with no outs. However a pop-up, a line-out and a strike-out stranded both runners in scoring position.

Chadwick batted 2-for-3 to lead the West hitters. Singletary and fellow seniors Kylie Durden and Kaitlynn Brisson added 1 hit each to the Lady Knight attack.

Chadwick started in the circle and pitched 2.2 innings allowing 2 runs on 4 hits and striking out 4. Senior Madison Taylor worked 1.2 innings of relief and allowed 6 runs -2 earned – on 5 hits while striking out one. Durden finished up working 1.2 innings and gave up a run on 3 hits.

Herring batted 2-for-3 with a double, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Tyndall was 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Makayla Sasnett finished 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored, and Boone was 2-for-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored.

The Lady Knights concluded their season with a 15-8 record. South Lenoir improved to 12-6 and will travel to Midway for their 2nd round game.
