KILL DEVIL HILLS – After 106.5 minutes of soccer, First Flight scored a ‘golden goal’ that gave the Nighthawks a 2-1 victory over East Bladen in the 2nd round of the NCHSAA Class 2A Boys Soccer Playoffs.
Senior Garrett Melvin drilled in East Bladen’s only goal on a penalty kick in the second half. The Nighthawks scored their 1st goal in the 2nd half and the teams were deadlocked 1-1 at the end of regulation.
Neither team scored in two 20-minute overtime periods. At that point the game moves into 5-minute extra time periods in which the game ends immediately if a team scores. After one scoreless 5-minute period, the Nighthawks tallied the game-winner 1.5 minutes into the 2nd extra time period.
Coach Jay Raynor’s Eagles completed their season with a 9-2 record. First Flight, the No. 3 seed in the East, will host Croatan in a 3rd round game.
