CHAPEL HILL – The N. C. High School Athletic Association could allow summer workouts to begin June 1 when the NCHSAA’s dead period on athletic activities is set to expire. Athletic activities were suspended by the NCHSAA on March 13 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However state and local governments including local school districts must give their approval before summer workouts or any other athletic activities can resume.

HighSchoolOT.com’s Nick Stevens reported Tuesday that this information was in an email that the NCHSAA sent to update their membership.

“After consulting with superintendents across the state, it was determined that a set date is necessary and important to help ensure that there is consistency as we move towards what is typically the summer season,” the email read.

The email notes that facilities should remain closed unless they are open to the general public.

Coaches are not usually allowed to work with their athletes during a NCHSAA dead period, however the NCHSAA has allowed coaches to do virtual workouts with their athletes during the COVID-19 dead period.

The chance that summer workouts could resume on June 1 is encouraging for high school athletics in North Carolina, but that resumption date is far from certain.

“These regulations will never supersede the governor’s mandates and allowances, nor those of the local school system,” the email stated.
