I had the opportunity a few weeks ago to have a guided tour of the new Bladenboro Fire Department by Fire Fighter / Fire Department Secretary Wanda Coleman and I was very impressed. Our Fire Fighters deserve the best equipment and facilities and I was glad to see Bladenboro is receiving a nice facility.

The construction of the department is now complete and I wanted to share with our readers a little of what I saw on the tour. The fire department has infrared heaters; the bay doors have safety features so the doors will automatically stop if someone walks under them while they are coming down. There is a laundry room with a washer and dryer, and hopefully a place to shoot some pool.

The department has eight trucks and all the trucks will fit in the new facility. The drive way goes around the entire building. Fire Chief Jackie Coleman has a plan already worked out on how to get the trucks in and out as fast as possible when needed according to Wanda.

There is a day room, offices, a conference room, a radio room, a kitchen, a training room, and everything is ADA. People wanting to help out at the fire department, but have special needs, this new facility is equipped for those special needs. There is even a back porch for the Fire Fighters to enjoy fellowship while they are not out fighting fires and saving lives.

The Bladenboro Fire Department has around 50 Volunteer Fire Fighters according to Wanda. All the Bladenboro Fire Fighters are volunteers. Wanda said, “We are mighty fortunate. A lot of the departments struggle to get volunteers, but we never have.”

K & S Builders from Proctorville is the contractor that built the facility. “We couldn’t be happier with the contractor,” Wanda said. The new sign proudly displayed on the new building was made by Sammy Shackleford of Lumberton.

The old Fire Department will be used by Bladenboro’s Town Maintenance Department according to Wanda. There will be an Open House to showcase the new facility sometime in late September or early October. We will keep you informed about the date of the Open House.

Thank you for the tour Fire Fighter Wanda Coleman! Congratulations on the new building and thank you all for what you do to serve Bladen County.
