NC Charter School Advisory Board approves Charter School for BladenThe Emerau Bladen Charter School is moving forward in the process of preparing to open its doors by August 2017, according to Kate Alice Dunaway, executive director of the Emereau schools. Emerau Bladen was one of eight Charter Schools to receive approval in August from the NC State Board of Education to open for the 2017-18 academic year.

One of the items the board of Emerau Bladen is working on is a location for the school. Dunaway said the board is working with Advantage Capital for Education to review potential sites. She said that Advantage Capital for Education is expected to make a recommendation to the Emerau Bladen board at its October meeting.

Dunaway did say that the board is seeking a location that is within a reasonable distance of Elizabethtown.

Dunaway said the school will initially serve grades K-6 and add an additional grade each year until it becomes a K-12 school.

She said the Emerau Bladen along with the boards of the other seven approved Charter Schools will now begin a series of monthly meetings with the NC Office of Charter Schools in preparation for opening.  The first of those meetings is scheduled for the last week of September.

Dunaway said that State Board wants to review items with the Charter School boards.

She said that soon after the meetings in Raleigh, the approved schools will be allowed to open up websites and being the process of sending out more information.

“Enrollment for brand news schools is typically not confirmed until the spring,” said Dunaway, when asked about possible enrollment dates.  She added the school is on track to open in August 2017.

Dunaway said currently, there is a timeline of various documents that are required by the state to be submitted over the next year.

Dunaway said Charter Schools are tuition-free public schools of choice that are obligated to the State Board of Education. Charter Schools are held accountable through the State assessment and accountability system, according to the Office of Charter Schools in Raleigh.
