A new law signed by N.C. Governor Roy Cooper this month would end emissions testing for 27 counties in North Carolina. Here locally, only Cumberland, New Hanover and Onslow counties will be required to continue emissions testing on vehicles. The changes were included in a bill designed to offer “regulatory relief” to the citizens of North Carolina.

According to WITN, state environmental regulators say North Carolina’s air quality is clean enough to allow for emissions testing of vehicles in only 22 counties. Before this law, 48 of the state’s 100 counties were required to perform emissions tests on vehicles.

Counties who are still required to perform emissions tests are mainly the more urbanized areas of the state. They are Almanac, Buncombe, Cumberland, Davidson, Durham, Forsyth, Franklin, Gaston, Guilford, Iredell, Johnston, Lee, Lincoln, Mecklenberg, New Hanover, Onslow, Randolph, Rockingham, Rowan, Union and Wake.

Drivers in North Carolina are still required to have an annual vehicle inspection.
