RALEIGH – State officials have announced an extension to the second public comment period and a new public hearing date to seek additional feedback on a permit application from Malec Brothers Transport, LLC. The Division of Air Quality (DAQ) will hold a public hearing scheduled for 7 p.m. on May 15 at Acme Delco Middle School, 26133 Andrew Jackson Highway, in Delco on the Malec Brothers’ draft permit. The public comment period has been extended to May 18.

Malec Brothers Transport, which is based in Australia, has applied to the N.C. Division of Air Quality, or DAQ, for a permit to use methyl bromide to fumigate logs at a facility the company plans to open in Delco, a community about 18 miles west of Wilmington. The company is seeking a permit to treat logs with methyl bromide in shipping containers before the products are exported.

Written comments will be accepted during the public comment period by sending emails to the following address: publiccomments@ncdenr.gov. Please type “Malec Brothers Fumigation” in the subject line. Written comments can also be sent by traditional mail to: Ms. Urva Patel, N.C. Division of Air Quality, 1641 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, N.C. 27699-1641.

DAQ will consider all public comments and other available information about the permit before deciding whether to issue the final permit, deny the permit or issue it with amended conditions.
