The Fayetteville Observer is reporting that Chris Mumma, Joseph Sledge’s attorney, says Sledge could be freed for a 1978 double murder that occurred in Bladen County.
He was convicted of the 1976 murder of Joseph Davis and her daughter Aileen who lived near Elizabethtown.
According to the article, Mumma is quoted as saying Bladen County District Attorney Jon David is consenting to Joseph’s innocence. David has not responded publicly to the report.
A recent hearing of the NC Innocence Inquiry Commission failed to link the killing to Sledge. Hairs found on the body of Aileen Davis’s nude body did not belong to Sledge, according to DNA testing.
