Bladen County Clerk of Superior Court, Niki Dennis sent out a warning on Thursday evening of scammers threatening local residents. Mrs. Dennis urges all residents to help spread the word.

A couple of residents received phone calls this week from someone claiming to be from the United States Marshals Office making threats to arrest the individual for failure to appear for jury duty, Mrs. Dennis reported.

“We don’t send out the US Marshal’s for criminal arrests for failure to appear for jury duty,” Mrs. Dennis stated.

The caller claims payment is due in order to avoid arrest. One victim of the caller said they demanded $900 in payment by the way of “Walmart vouchers”, according to Mrs. Dennis.

“One person who received a call reported the caller used Judge Scott Ussery’s name during the conversation,” Mrs. Dennis said.

Judge Ussery called Mrs. Dennis to report the matter and said he would be calling the Federal Bureau of Investigation about the matter because a name and phone number had been uncovered.

“Please let others know and ask them to tell others who may not read the news,” Mrs. Dennis said.

If you or someone you know receives a call with threats of arrest for failure to appear for jury duty, please contact the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office at 910-862-6960.
