LELAND – Columbus County capitalized on several West Bladen errors to score 7 runs in the top of the seventh inning and claim a 10-4 victory in the opening round of the North Carolina Dixie Pre-Majors Tournament.

West Bladen will play the loser of Saturday night’s Duplin County/Brunswick County game Sunday at 1 p.m.

The scored was tied 3-3 after 6 innings, and the first Columbus batter in the seventh flied out, before the errors and one solid hit produced the 7 unearned runs.

The Knights scored a run in the third inning. Jonathan Ashworth belted a single, stole second base and moved up on a passed ball. Weston Pidgeon’s fielder’s choice drove in Ashworth.

In the fourth inning, Scott Bowen lined a single and stole second base. Caleb Sholar knocked in Bowen with a single.

The Knights scored again in the fifth. Ashworth was hit by a pitch, and Pidgeon walked. Logan West beat out a bunt single to load the bases, and Jarrett Williams fielder’s choice scored Ashworth.

After Columbus took the lead in the top of the seventh, West Bladen answered with one run in the bottom of the seventh. Pidgeon smacked a single, moved up on a passed ball and scored on Williams’ fielder’s choice.

Trent West pitched the first 5 innings for the Knights and struck out ten batters. Trey Storms faced the minimum of 3 batters in the sixth and worked into the seventh inning. Bowen finished up on the mound.
