North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper has declared a state of emergency which will begin at 8 am Thursday as the state begins preparing for Hurricane Irma. The state of South Carolina declared a state of emergency earlier in the day on Wednesday.

While the storm has just passed the Virgin Islands, Gov. Cooper encourages residents in North Carolina to begin their preparations.

“Our state emergency management staff has been monitoring this storm closely for several days now and our state is preparing for the storm,” Cooper said.

The state of emergency allows state officials and agencies to move resources such as medicine, fuel and food to areas that will need it when the storm passes.

Residents are strongly encouraged to make an emergency plan and learn their evacuation routes. You should also stock an emergency kit with items such as flashlights, batteries, blankets, a cell phone and charger.
